The Independent, a British news daily published in London, recently took an editorial decision of calling Mumbai ‘Bombay’ because according to them, ‘Mumbai’ is a term imposed by ‘Hindu nationalists.’
The decision hasn’t gone down well with many Indians who believe the names of Mumbai and many other cities were legitimately changed through democratic process and in fact, what really was imposed was ‘Bombay’.
The controversy is not new though. Last year, the CBFC, which certifies films, had included ‘Bombay’ in a list of cuss words not to be used in films. After much condemnation by the public and filmmakers alike, the list was later reportedly withdrawn.
Now that Amol Rajan, the editor of The Independent has sparked a debate, a video from comedian Russel Peters’ show has surfaced on the web where he hilariously explains why he would like to address Mumbai as ‘Bombay.’
Check it out. His stand might sound more reasonable.
