Once it happened that while Shiva and his beloved consort Parvati had a discussion in Kailasa.
Parvati’s Questions to Shiva
IS IT THE DEVOTION TO RAMA IS TRULY TARAKA (Helps in crossing the Ocean of Samsara) ?
RAMA IS THE ORIGINAL BRAHMAN TRANSCENDING GUNAS, PRAKRUTI & OTHER MANIFESTATIONS; THEN WHY WAS RAMA IGNORANT OF HIS TRUE SELF (till Brahma reveals to him the truth about his transcendent self)?
IF RAMA KNEW THE TRUTH ABOUT HIS TRUE SELF THEN WHY WAS HE STRICKEN BY GRIEF BY THE LOSS OF SITA? WHY DID HE BEMOAN HIS FATE?
AND IF RAMA WAS INDEED WITHOUT KNOWLEDGE OF HIS SELF, THEN HOW CAN HE BE WORTHY OF WORSHIP (He is on par with any ignorant Soul)?
PLEASE REMOVE MY DOUBTS AND INFORM ME THE CORRECT APPROACH TO RAMA
Mahadeva Answers Parvati
Shiva verily answers Parvati that what she seeks is the truth concerning the supreme self. The truth about Rama is basically esoteric, extremely profound, very deep and subtle. The Mahadeva salutes Rama as the noblest of Raghu’s lineage and reiterates that Rama is indeed the supreme self as distinct from Prakruti. Rama is the absolute who has projected all of the universes by his power Maya-Sakti. He dwells within and without the Brahmanda like the element Ether. He resides and powers all beings, yet is invisible to the naked eyes. He is the innermost sheath of all sentiments, he is the ultimate seer and the only witness of his Maya’s creation. The polluted minds covered with ignorance know this not.
Unenlightened people superimpose their own ignorance and see Rama as involved with worldly entanglements as themselves. They think that just as they are attached to their own relatives and materialistic possessions and stuck in the multitude milieu of mundane activities so was Rama. They fail to perceive Sri Rama dwelling within their hearts.
They are deluded by their own I-ness (Ahamkara) that is so deafening that the Rama Taraka Mantra is subdued in the continuous chatter of the everyday attachments that scream out for attention from the every increasing egotistical existence. Make no mistake, Rama whose nature is pure Bliss – Consciousness can neither see rise nor fall, He is the witness of Ajnana (ignorance) and can never be a victim of it. You see Devi, Maya the power of ignorance is dependent on him and cannot cause infatuation or ignorance.
