Xiaomi Mi 5 – Worth the wait

Xiaomi Mi 5 was announced in Barcelona, today at the Mobile World Congress. The “Chinese Apple”, almost took two years to unveil their flagship phone. The company was teasing the device’s camera and other features for the past couple of months and finally the device is here after a long wait. The Mi 5 comes in 3 variances, Standard Edition, High Edition and the Mi 5 Ceramic Exclusive Edition.

Mobile World Congress, 2016 has been full of surprises. We have already seen the Galaxy S7, a stellar device from Samsung, LG G5, A modular smartphone from LG and now we have here, the Mi 5.

Design wise, the Mi 5 looks remarkable. There is no protruding camera hump on the back, which looks great. The phone has almost no bezel. There is a fingerprint scanner on the home button, curved edges and it weighs 40 grams less than the Galaxy S7, as light as 129g.

Opinion: The Mi 5 is undoubtedly the best device from Xiaomi. It is the smartphone with the lowest price which has Snapdragon 820 processor. It has a premium design with curved edges and an aluminum unibody construction. We have already seen the photographs that were captured from the Mi 5, and the camera seems to be really good, too. It also comes with Android Marshmallow and a fingerprint scanner with Quick charge 3.0.

The 1080p display, a power efficient Snapdragon 820 processor, Quick charge 3.0 along with Doze mode in Marshmallow should give enough juice for the phone that has 3000 MAH battery. The 16 MP camera with OIS should suffice any average smartphone user. Overall, the Mi 5 will definitely give the Samsung Galaxy S7 a run for its money.

Price and Release date in India

Although the specs sheet is very similar to that of the LG G5 and Galaxy S7, the pricing is much cheaper. Xiaomi is known for their attractive pricing for high-end devices and it will continue the same path.

The price in China will be as follows:

  • Standard Edition – 2000 Yuan (~21,000 Rs./-)
  • High Edition – 2300 Yuan (~24,000 Rs./-)
  • Ceramic Exclusive – 2700 Yuan (~28,000 Rs./-)

We think the price in India will be similar. The Mi 5 looks like the device that many of us were waiting for, flagship specs, premium design and attractive pricing makes this phone a must buy. That said if you are looking for a much better option, the Galaxy S7 may be your cup of tea.
