‘Shutterdulai’ Brings A Much Needed Change In The Tulu Cinema

Usually, Tulu films have a flavor of comedy in it. Thanks to the popular comedy stage artists who has made Tulu cinema/drama in synonymous with comedy. But, in a welcoming change a film titled ‘Shutterdulai’ which was released last week is silently making its mark in the box-office. This film is the remake of 2012 Malayalam movie ‘Shutter’ and is the first remake film in Tulu. Although the market of Tulu cinema is limited to a certain area, the makers are not hesitating to experiment with the subject.  And this film is the testimony for that.

Here is the plot of the film-

Rajeeva (Veteran Kannada actor Jai Jagadish) is an NRI working in the Gulf. He comes to his hometown Mangalore on annual leave. He has invested in a small commercial property next to his house, which he has let out to the shopkeepers. But, one of his shops lies vacant.

During this holiday, he meets his friends every evening inside the vacant shop and they bond every night over a few drinks. During one such evening, Damu (Mitra) an auto rickshaw driver and a friend of Rajeeva locks Bangari (Anita Bhat) a siren, along with Rajeeva inside the vacant shop promising to unlock the shop shutter after they spend some time together inside the locked shop.

Meanwhile, Damu meets one of his passengers, Vijay (Shashikanth) a film Director, who had forgotten his bag in Damu’s autorickshaw that morning. Vijay on knowing that he would get his bag back celebrates by offering a couple of drinks to Damu. Eventually, Damu on his way back to the locked shop gets into trouble with the cops and fails to return that night to open the shutter as promised to Rajeeva.

Both Rajeeva and Bangari spend a couple of nights together inside the locked shutter waiting for Damu’s return to unlock it. The rest of the narrative revolves around the embarrassing plight of the two inside the shutter and the lives of Damu and Vijay outside it.(source)

Performances

Veteran Kannada actor Jai Jagadeesh has been very impressive with his performance. He has put in all his vast experience in the field of acting into this role. Mitra as rickshaw driver Damu has shown that he has the mettle for serious performances too. Shashikanth Gatti as a film director(is the director of the film too) has given a clinical performance. Anita Bhat as a siren beautifully presents her role from being loud initially to a caretaker as the film progresses.  Altogether, this film revolves around these 4 personalities.

Shashikanth Gatti has succeeded both as a director and actor in this film. Niranjan Babu as the cinematographer, Manikanth Kadri as the music director, Joni Harsha as the editor has contributed well in their fields to bring out a film like ‘Shutterdulai’. This film is produced by Rajesh Bhat and Anish Antony.

Response 

This film has been well received by the audiences in Mangalore despite the competition from hit Kannada films like GBSM and U-turn.  If you are a Tuluva and not yet watched the film then you are surely gonna miss this remarkable Tulu film till date. So, do watch this movie in your nearest theaters because we believe that ‘Shutterdulai’ team deserves the acclaim for bringing in a new change to the Tulu cinema.
