Few years ago a director of the Kannada Film Industry announced a crowd-funded movie, after successful completion of the movie he had proved his new ways, new technicality, and new thoughts to the audience successfully. This movie was not a typical sandalwood movie. It was the first crowd-funded movie in Sandalwood, in fact if I am not wrong its a first such movie in the Indian cinemas. The name of the movie was LUCIA and the Director was Pawan Kumar.
The Director of Lucia, Pawan Kumar is once again back with his new movie “U-Turn”. Recently he released it’s trailer and it has 2, 26,510 hits in YouTube already and it is increasing. Pawan Kumar is known for his new style of filmmaking, and also for his presence on the social network. He is active on Facebook, Twitter by promoting the movie and sometimes does question hour with fans. Recently, he appeared on Reddit an online bulletin board system or social network) for a question hour session with fans.

Q: Do you follow European cinema or any others? What are your favorite movies?
Pawan : I do… top of the mind – Amelie

Q: What do you think about Western Cinema? Hollywood, in particular. PS. Big fan of Lucia. Well done on that!
Pawan : Thank you… I dont have specific thoughts about that… technical excellence is great… sometimes… the stories do slip a bit..

Pawan : Wild tales…

Q: Do you have any plans to direct a crime thriller in the near future?
Pawan : I dont know yet…. U turn is a crime thriller.

Q: What is your take on piracy? How can it be stopped?
Pawan : Only the end user is responsible for the demand… and only they can stop it..
Q: but content has to reach for audience at affordable means and ways. Business is still sticking to old avenues
Pawan: New experiments are tried… but there is so much at stake… for the investors. And it’s not a product which can be developed later… once out… its just out there.

Q: When writing a new script, do you feel the pressure of the huge expectations on you, due to your previous project Lucia? If yes, how do you deal with it?
Pawan: NO the pressure is not from the past… but from self.

Q: If you had a chance to work in another film industry, which one would you chose?
Would you prefer that over Kannada industry?
Pawan: Hmmm… I know kannada and I am born here in Blore… So I kinda connect to this place and my stories seem rooted to this fact. So I dont really know if I’d choose… something else. But sometimes… I feel I can do something in Hindi..

Q: Hey Pawan, u have paused C10h14n2 project.. What is the budget u are expecting and what is the quality u are dreaming about that movie??
Pawan : I think … to make it the way it is written… I need about 5cr .. hence postponed.
Q: Don’t you feel, your story deserves a much better budget to reach the masses. How about approaching a Kollywood producer for just this one movie ?
Pawan : I would like to make it in KAnnada…

Q: How was your experience with crowd funding?
Do you see Indian film industries moving into a world where most movies can get crowdfunded, thus cutting the power of production houses, and encouraging talent everywhere?
Pawan : its great and yet tedious. It requires more structuring.
No… i dont think there are many successful examples… theoretically yes.. seems workable… but not always practical.

Pawan : I watched the roads.

Q:Can we expect a movie in the drama genre from you ? What is your favourite genre of movies?
Pawan : I’d love to…. sometime in the future… when we have easier ways to distribute.
