iPhone 8 or the iPhone X?

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus were launched in India recently, but the all new iPhone X will be here in a month or two. And you might already know the features and details of the new phones and how they are better than the last year’s model. Our aim is to answer your question, Should you buy the iPhone 8 or wait for the iPhone X? Let’s share our opinion and see if we could answer the most confusing question of 2017. (Before we begin, this article is just my opinion and I am not a Apple hater. In fact, I love Apple products, but this is neutral).

The answer comes down to a few differences:

Price:

Obviously, let’s get the Dinosaur in the room out of the way. Money is everything. The iPhone 8 starts at 64,000 Rs /- and the 8 Plus starts from 73,000 Rs/- for the 64GB variants. The iPhone X begins at 89,000 Rs/-, and that wasn’t a typo. In the US, the prices are $649, $799 and $999 respectively. So, that’s almost 20,000 Rs./- more than the price in the US.  Hey, if you want the Apple, you gotta pay more than you do for other fruits. So, that’s the first thing you need to keep in mind. It’d be wiser to go for the iPhone 8 and an Apple watch together and still pay less than what you’d pay for the iPhone X. But, if you want the best, you got to pay for it.

But to sweeten the offer, there are a few deals on the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, such as the 10,000 Rs/- cash back offer, 70% buyback if you buy it from Jio and we’re sure Amazon and Flipkart will keep taunting each other to lure the customers with even better deals in the coming days.

Design:

There’s a reason the iPhone X is priced so high. For Apple, the design game is a very important one. They play with your mind to convince you that it’s the best design out there. And for the most part, it is true. But, it comes at a cost. They never change. The current iPhone design is a refinement of the iPhone 6’s design that came 3 years ago, in 2014. You know what has changed in 3 years?

In 3 years, Samsung – from an ugly looking, cheap plastic designed, huge bezeled, pathetic Touch Wiz UI phones, to the best designed premium glass-backed, an industry leading OLED Edge displays, wireless charging, waterproofed phones.

Meanwhile, Apple, as always, is playing the catch up game. This time around, it’s a little too late. All the exciting features of the iPhone X are iterative from Samsung and other manufacturers. The Face ID was introduced in Android years ago. Even the gestures on the iOS 11 are not new, they were from the famous webOS on the Palm Pre that came way back in 2010. But, that’s what Apple does. They are good at refining things.

Even the near bezel less design of the iPhone X is not new. Essential came up with a similar phone and Samsung, LG and Xiaomi are all trying to go bezel less for a while now. But because of the huge fan following, ecosystem and their market reach, Apple has a winner here.

Camera and other minor upgrades:

The camera on the iPhone X will have dual OIS and a wider aperture, compared to the iPhone 8 Plus. So, it will have better portrait and low light capabilities. And the battery is also slightly bigger. Of course, there’s the OLED display, again from Samsung.

And the front camera, along with a few other sensors will work as the Face ID, which is still mocked for the failure during the demo at the keynote. But, Apple will make sure it will be perfect when the phone comes out to market. Although, it sounds futuristic, it won’t be convenient like Touch ID, for me at least.

Verdict:

If all you want is an iPhone, you can get a good deal for the iPhone 7, which is more durable, since the iPhone 8 has a glass back.

Are you willing to pay 25,000 Rs./- extra for a futuristic design, Face ID, bezel less OLED display, and a slightly better camera? or in other words, do you want the best iPhone? if your answer is yes, then you should wait for the iPhone X.
