Friendship Day: As per Wikipedia, Friendship Day was originally promoted by Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmark cards in 1930, intended to be 2 August and a day when people celebrated their friendships by sending cards. The idea of a World Friendship Day was first proposed on 20 July 1958 by Dr. Ramon Artemio Bracho during a dinner with friends in Puerto Pinasco in Paraguay. Friendship Day celebrations occur on different dates in different countries. On 27 April 2011 the General Assembly of the United Nations declared 30 July as official International Friendship Day. However, some countries, including India, celebrate Friendship Day on the first Sunday of August.
I Friend you: Love is in the Air, they say. They even say “Everything is fair in love and war”. But, we often wonder why no one talks more about friendship? Is it only me or even you sometimes think that, why no one ever tells I friend you? Is friend a noun or verb? It is both, actually (as per the Dictionary!). I am not the first or last person on earth to write about friendship. I am just here to craft my thoughts with you as a friend, you know, we often show our friendship, but we never really express our thoughts about friendship.
In the Movies: It may be a classic and evergreen “Sholay” or “3 idiots” in Hindi, “Happy Days” in Telugu, “Thalapathi” in Tamil, “Dhiggajaru” in Kannada or “Bangalore Days” in Malayalam, every movie that has a touch of friendship, is often a hit. Not only they succeed, but they stay in your heart forever and remind you of friendship.
In the Music: Same goes for the songs, you take a “Show me the meaning” in English or “Yeh Dosti” or in Hindi, “Mustafa Mustafa” in Tamil, “Kuchiku Kuchiku” in Kannada or “Oh My Friend” in Telugu, the songs will not stop playing from your head without provoking thoughts about your friends.
In the Literature: Life is never complete without friends. No matter what type of a character you are, you always find a person to be your companion.“A Man is known by the company he keeps” or “You are the average of five people you spend your time with”, are some of the famous sayings that give emphasize on how vital a friend in life is. And there’s no such thing as good friend or bad friend, because the word friend itself is good enough (from a Tamil movie).
In Social Media: Can you imagine a Facebook, Twitter or Google Plus without your friends? To whom you will make birthday posts then? whom will you tag in your photographs? Whom would you make jealous by uploading all those pictures you took when you went out with your crush? Whom will you chat with in WhatsApp? Or simply put, there won’t be such things as Social Media, if it isn’t for friends.
In your Day To Day Life: In the journey day by day journey of life, a ship that won’t sink is friendship! (Pardon me for my poor translation skills – that’s the Mustafa song, you know!). You never really choose your friends, it just happens.
I remember my college friend who always used to get bullied by everyone in the class. Even I used to make fun of him. When I asked him, why don’t you scold us or why don’t you ever get mad at us? He said, “Machi, they are also our friends da, let them laugh – Look how happy they are“. He stood tall and made me realize, how much precious friendship is.
A friend is one who:
understands you without you saying, never lets you cry, calls you just to disturb when you are busy, fights for you, shares your food and clothes, is always by your side, takes your burden away, cares for you like your mother, holds you when you need him/her, waits for you, fights with you, shares your drink and cigarette and pillow, bunks the class/work for you, watches your favorite hero’s movie without any interest, laughs at you, makes you laugh, beats you up, forgets your birthday but never forgets you and They do everything with no expectation!
– For no reason at all!!!
Now, coming to the question, why don’t anyone say, “I friend you?”. Well, you never have to tell your friend that you love them or you’re sorry. Saale, Dost ko thanks bolta hei? Pagal hei kya? Kyun Ki Pyaar Dosti Hai Mera Yaar! Happy friendship day!!!
– Dedicated to the craziest people I know on Earth, my friends!
